Ward 12 Update March 2019

March 8, 2019

Hello everyone, there are a few items at City Hall I think may be of interest.

This winter has been a tough one! With multiple-day snow storms, freezing rain, and more frequent freeze/thaw cycles, it is clear that winters in Edmonton are changing. In order to ensure that our roadways remain safe and navigable, our Snow and Ice Control policy needs to evolve and adapt to the changing winter conditions. I have heard and will advocate for concerns on the icy conditions, reduced visibility, and corrosion with the use of anti-icing and de-icing techniques. In addition, I recognize that improvements can also be made to snow and ice removal in residential neighbourhoods. The Parks and Roads team is in the process of collecting feedback on where improvements can be made. I invite you to share your input by taking the online survey, which is open until March 31: (www.edmonton.ca/transportation/on_your_streets/residential-winter-road-clearing).

Speeding is another concern I have heard a lot about, particularly in playground zones and on residential streets. Residents have requested additional automated enforcement along residential collectors, and while this is not an opportunity available to us right now, EPS does deploy patrols on a rotating basis to hotspots in our City. Since enforcement can’t be everywhere at once, I would encourage you to help increase awareness on the impact of unsafe driving, by talking to your friends, families, and other members from your community.

Changes have been made to the zoning bylaws that are now in effect. These changes make well-designed and accessible suites easier for Edmontonians to develop. Among the introduced changes are:

  • Allowing garage & garden suites on properties of any size, including narrow lot properties.

  • Increasing design flexibility through adjustments to floor area regulations.

  • Simplifying regulations to create a simpler application process for builders and neighbours.

  • Making it easier and creating incentives for landowners to build accessible suites.

I have hosted a few Saturday mornings drop-in coffees over the past couple of months. It’s been great to talk to residents about a host of different topics! I hope you can join me at my he next drop-in coffee meet on Saturday, March 30th from 10am-12pm, at the Tamarack Tim Hortons  (1524 23 Avenue NW).
