Back to School Traffic Safety

September 12, 2019

As we have approached the start of a new school year, the issue of traffic safety is top of mind for many in Ward 12.

If you have concerns about traffic safety in your neighbourhood, there are a few different options the City will consider to best address your concerns. These include: requesting police presence for enforcement, automated enforcement, enhanced signage or crosswalk markings, and digital feedback signs.

Our office has noticed many constituents have requested that the City consider implementing traffic calming measures as alternatives, particularly speed bumps. While speed bumps may seem like the silver bullet solution to speeding, in reality, drivers often accelerate sharply between speed bumps out of frustration. Nearby residents are disrupted by noise, especially when larger vehicles like buses and trucks go over them. Speed bumps also cause problems for snow removal machines and emergency services, so the City uses them as a last resort.  That being said, I am working closely with the Traffic Safety team to determine what resources and opportunities we can access to improve roadway safety in our community.

I would also like to try to improve safety throughout Ward 12 by slowing down in neighbourhoods, and being careful while parking. Remember to give at least 5 meters of space before a corner curb, crosswalks, and yield and stop signs, so that pedestrians can be visible to approaching traffic. If there’s an area you’re aware of that could use some improvements to improve traffic safety, please don’t hesitate to contact my office and we’ll help as best we can.

If you’ve noticed a problem area within your community and want to explore options for enhancing traffic safety, please feel free to contact either 311 or my office.

Our regularly scheduled coffee meets will resume in the Fall. However, in the meantime, if there are any issues you’d like to discuss with me, please do not hesitate to contact my office! I am more than happy to schedule a meeting. You can contact my office by phone: 780-496-8148 or email: mohinder.banga@edmonton.ca.
